Troubled singer Kizito Mihigo has allegedly committed suicide, according to Rwanda National Police
statement.

This Monday morning, Kizito was found dead in a cell at Remera police station.

Last Friday, Rwanda Investigation Bureau confirmed that Kizito Mihigo was arrested while trying to illegally escape through porous border in Nyaruguru district, to join armed groups meant to destabilise Rwanda. RIB said he tried to bribe citizens who first saw him, hence committing a corruption offense.

In February 2015, Kizito Mihigo was convicted to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to crimes including conspiracy to murder President Paul Kagame and other top leaders of the country.

In September 2018, Kizito Mihigo who had been serving a 10-year sentence received Presidential pardon alongside 2,000 inmates convicted for various crimes.

According to RIB, Mihigo’s attempt to escape constitutes a breach of conditions set in the Presidential Order Nº132/01 of 14/09/2018 exercising the Prerogative of Mercy, leading to the revocation of the Presidential pardon.

The law stipulates that, upon revocation of the grant of mercy, the grantee shall serve, in prison, the remaining part of the sentence, which shall be counted from the day the grant of mercy is revoked.
